A Birthday Beyond Life: Honoring My Grandfather Through Kindness

Today would have been my grandfather’s birthday. It has been seven years since he passed away, but his presence remains in our hearts, guiding us in ways both big and small. My father, as he does every year, chose to honor my grandfather’s memory in the most meaningful way—by giving back. He prepared food for children at a special school, a gesture of gratitude for my grandfather’s life and a wish for his peaceful afterlife.

This school is unlike any other. It is home to children who are blind, deaf, autistic, or have Down syndrome. Every time I visit, my heart feels a mix of emotions—sadness for the struggles these children face, but also warmth and joy because they are living their lives in their own unique way. They laugh, they learn, they play, and most importantly, they are loved.

As we handed out the meals, their faces lit up with happiness. Afterward, we gave them chocolates, and they eagerly lined up, their excitement evident in their smiles and laughter. Moments like these remind me how even the simplest acts of kindness can bring immense joy.

Then came a moment that touched me deeply. The students and teachers gathered to give a speech, thanking my family for the meal and remembering my grandfather. Their words were filled with sincerity, and though my grandfather is no longer with us, I felt as if he was present, smiling from somewhere above.

Among the children, I noticed a new student—a young boy who I believe was diagnosed with Down syndrome. He was eating with the help of the teachers, enjoying the meal in his own time. But what caught my attention the most was his father. He stood nearby, watching his son with an expression I cannot forget—one of deep worry and sadness. I could see the silent questions in his eyes, the pain of an uncertain future, and the love that was both fierce and fragile. It was a moment that stayed with me, a reminder of the silent struggles parents go through for their children.

This day, like many others, reinforced an important lesson: Life is precious, and we must never take it for granted. If you have the privilege of a healthy body, cherish it. Respect your parents, for their sacrifices are immeasurable. And most importantly, strive to do something good for the world, no matter how small. Because in the end, it is kindness and love that keep the memory of those we’ve lost alive.

My grandfather may no longer be here, but through these acts of giving, his spirit lives on. And for that, I am grateful.
