It's Okay Not to Have a Dream
Growing up, we’re often told that we need a dream—a clear vision of what we want to be in the future. Society makes it seem like having a dream is the most important thing, as if life is a straight road where every step is planned. But what if you don’t have one? What if you’re just going with the flow, figuring things out as you move forward? Well, I’m here to tell you—it’s completely okay.
Even though I study law now, I have no future plan at all. I remember how I just filled the form for high school subjects carefreely without even understanding. I chose German language, Chinese language, and Geography. And now here I am, doing law to be a lawyer. I don’t know what I will do after passing my Attorneys-at-Law exam…
But you know what? I think that’s fine.
Life Isn’t a Checklist
Some people have known what they wanted to be since they were kids, and that’s amazing. But for others, life is more about exploration. Not having a fixed dream doesn’t mean you’re lost—it just means you’re open to possibilities.
When I look back, I realize that I always loved languages. Even now, I still do—especially Thai and German. But does that mean I have to turn that love into a profession? Maybe, maybe not. Passion doesn’t always have to lead to a career; sometimes, it’s just something that makes life richer.
Just Follow Your Heart
If you don’t have a dream, just do what you enjoy. Try new things, explore different paths, and don’t pressure yourself into choosing something just because everyone else has a plan. The truth is, plans change, and people change. What matters is that you’re doing something that makes you happy right now.
If you love painting, paint. If you enjoy writing, write. If you want to learn a new language, go for it! Life isn’t about sticking to one path; it’s about discovering new roads and seeing where they take you.
We’re Still Young
People act like we need to have our entire future figured out by the time we’re in our twenties, but that’s not true. There’s so much time ahead of us to explore, fail, try again, and grow. Dreams can come at any moment, even when you least expect them. So don’t stress about not having a clear goal right now. Just take one step at a time and enjoy the journey.
So here’s my advice: Don’t worry about having a dream. Focus on what makes you happy, keep an open mind, and trust that you’ll find your way—one step at a time. After all, life isn’t about rushing to the destination; it’s about enjoying the ride.
