My Journey Through Law: An Intern's Perspective on Courtrooms, Cases, and Career Lessons
Embarking on an internship in the legal field has been one of the most eye-opening experiences of my journey as a law student. Under the guidance of Ms. Narmadha Meewaddana, a seasoned civil lawyer and notary, I stepped into the dynamic world of law, where every day brings new challenges, learning opportunities, and moments of profound realization.
First Steps Into the Legal World
Starting my internship in Kurunegala, I quickly adapted to the early mornings and structured routine of a legal practitioner. The courts open at 9:30 a.m., but my workday begins at 8:30 a.m., filled with preparation, discussions, and case evaluations. One of my earliest observations was the contrasting personalities in the courtroom—some lawyers exude warmth, while others maintain a more reserved demeanor. Despite these differences, the courtroom remains a stage where legal minds engage in intellectual battles, advocating for justice.
The Fascination With Divorce Cases
While land matters and deeds form a significant part of Sri Lankan legal practice, I found myself particularly drawn to divorce cases. They are filled with emotions, intricate legal arguments, and real-life drama that make them both challenging and intriguing. Observing cases involving asset division, alimony, and custody battles, I gained a deep appreciation for the delicate balance lawyers must maintain between legal expertise and empathy.
Lessons in Land Law and Deeds
Though initially tedious, my exposure to land law, deeds, and partitions helped me understand their fundamental role in legal practice. Ms. Meewaddana’s teachings on the importance of deeds—transfer deeds, lease agreements, mortgage bonds, and last wills—have equipped me with knowledge that will undoubtedly serve me in my career. The complexity of land disputes, often intertwined with historical claims and legislative intricacies, made me realize the meticulous nature of legal research and case preparation.
Courtroom Observations and Challenges
Beyond legal documentation and case analysis, my time in court revealed the procedural hurdles and unexpected challenges lawyers face. I once encountered a situation where a lawyer advised me to sit properly before the judge—an incident that, though minor, emphasized the importance of courtroom decorum. Witnessing case adjournments due to missing documents, unprepared witnesses, or procedural delays further highlighted the need for meticulous attention to detail in legal practice.
The Camaraderie and Mentorship
One of the most rewarding aspects of my internship has been the camaraderie with my fellow interns, the junior lawyer, and the court staff. Engaging in discussions, sharing observations, and even planning a trip to Kandy during court vacations added a personal touch to my professional growth. Ms. Meewaddana’s mentorship has been invaluable—her 30+ years of experience offer not just legal knowledge but wisdom about navigating the profession.
Looking Ahead
As I continue my legal education, this internship has reinforced my passion for law and advocacy. Whether it’s the intricacies of family law, the depth of land disputes, or the discipline of legal documentation, every experience has contributed to shaping my perspective on the legal profession. The courtroom may be an arena of arguments, but behind every case lies a story, a struggle, and a pursuit of justice—something I am eager to be a part of as I move forward in my career.
This journey is far from over, and I look forward to the many lessons, challenges, and victories that lie ahead. For aspiring lawyers, my advice is simple: immerse yourself in the experience, ask questions, and embrace every opportunity to learn. The legal world is demanding but profoundly rewarding, and I am grateful for every moment of this journey.
